Humanity has forever been fascinated by crying. Powerlessness and the loss of those dear to you are the chief provokers of tears. However, those sort of situations can also go hand in hand with anger and other emotions. And perhaps we also cry faced with a positive situation? Professor Ad Vingerhoets (University of Tilburg) is studying what is fact and what is fiction. Unlike Darwin he is convinced that tears in the course of the evolution did in fact have an important function, and still do, and that they are essential for human relations.
