Europe in the Netherlands: not 'yes' or 'no' but 'which Europe'?

THU 11.10.07 | 20.00 > 21.30

deBuren, Leopoldstraat 6, 1000 Brussels

We at deBuren are all in favour of a meaty discussion based on solid research. Indeed we regularly host the WRR (Scientific Government Policy Council), an independent advisory body for the Dutch government.

In 2005 the population of the Netherlands rejected the European constitution by a large majority. In this context the WRR has examined the problems surrounding the legitimacy of EU policy in the Netherlands in the Europa in Nederland (Europe in the Netherlands) report. On this basis the board puts forward several suggestions for increased legitimacy that go beyond the classical institutional approach. The WRR states that a suitable way to increase the involvement of citizens in Europe is not the referendum but the preferendum. This means presenting them with various alternatives rather than simply having to choose between 'yes' or 'no'.

The report will be discussed by Prof. Jacques Pelkmans and Ton van den Brink of the WRR, Tom de Bruijn, who is the Permanent Representative of the Netherlands at the EU, and the Belgian MP, Marianne Thyssen. The moderator is the Radio Netherlands World Service correspondent Matthijs Nieuwenhuis.
