citybooks Ostend

Fall 2009 till March 2010

The participants of citybooks 1: Ostend are welcomed by art centre Vrijstaat O., one of the regular partners of deBuren. The young Dutchman Martijn van de Griendt (º1970) is the photographer for Ostend. He is currently one of the best photographers in The Netherlands. In the fall of 2009,  Jeroen Olyslaegers and Christiaan Weijts were in residence in Ostend en in the second half of January, it was Bernard Dewulf’s turn. The last two participants were Peter Holvoet-Hanssen and Milena M. Flašar.

Vrijstaat O. acted as host, and took care of a public encounter with an interview and a reading. The famous art déco Hotel Du Parc receives the authors/guests. Agence Lecomte tended to the residence of Bernard Dewulf.

citybooks Ostend


From 15 November 2009 until 6 December 2009

citybooks is one of deBuren’s new projects. Following their two week stay in a Dutch, Flemish or European town or city, six writers will recount their experiences there in verse or text. Their experiences will later be compiled in audio and print to form a literary portrait of a city. The first town on the list is Ostend.

Poet and essayist Bernard Dewulf is one of the authors who reside in Ostend as participants of the new residency program City Books. During his stay he will talk to Anna Luyten (Knack) on Friday 29 January. Dewulf recites from his work and will give an impression of his time in Ostend.

deBuren and Vrijstaat O. present the harvest of their residency program citybooks Ostend for the first time. It is going to be a real festive weekend as Ostend is the first city of the European citybooks project.

In the spring of 2010, deBuren asked Dutch photographer Martijn van de Griendt to make a photo coverage of Ostend in the framework of the citybooks. Martijn had already made several photo books about street culture and teenagers and he enthusiastically accepted the invitation.
